Name: Izaäk Meulenbelt
Residence: Hellevoetsluis, the Netherlands
Year of birth: 1976
Bike: Giant Revolt
Riding period: 11 May – 8 September
Most favourite part: The shift in scenery from sunny Portugal and Spain all the way up to the Arctic north, with the wild landscapes of Northern Scandinavia towards Grense Jakobselv as the main highlight.
Random thoughts: Now I know I can survive a heatwave near 50°C in Spain, only to sleep in freezing conditions of -6°C in Lapland a few weeks later!
Peanut-butter mud in Portugal and broken spokes in Spain immediately set the tone for the route.
Fighting the Arctic headwinds and rain in beautiful Lapland is something I will never forget.
Now I know what it feels like to cycle all alone through the wild nature of Europe!
Big thanks to Andy Cox for creating this epic route!
